Bikes and Blessings

So as many of you know, I was recently in a bad bike accident. I was headed home from work, coasting down the big hill on the south side of BYU campus. As I neared the bottom of the hill, I went to brake my bike. The front bike cable snapped, and the remaining cable fell on top of my front bike tire. It wedged itself nicely between the tread of the tires. Before I had even realized it, I had flown over the front of my bike, and was flying headfirst towards the concrete.

It was a pretty bad day for me, to say the least. I ended up in the hospital with a concussion, about 20 stitches to my face, road rash all along my left side and little memory for several hours. But, through it all, I felt very blessed. Just weeks before my mother had insisted that I purchase a helmet. I have been riding daily for two and a half years without any accidents or a helmet. I had only been wearing a helmet for a small fraction of the time I had been biking when the worst happened. Without it, I probably would have had serious brain damage, or might have died.

I think we sometimes have these kind of moments in our lives to remind us of what is most important to us, to reflect on our own mortality and priories. I am thankful to have a wonderful wife, who not only calmly helped me through that difficult day, but who continues to loves me so unconditionally everyday and helps me become a better person. She is so very important to me, and I appreciate her goodness more and more everyday.

I am thankful for the blessings of modern medicine, that helped diagnose and treat my injuries. And lastly, I am so blessed to have the Gospel in my life. It gives me perspective and direction when I was again reminded of how fragile a life really is. I know the Gospel is real and it really does bless and comfort each one of us throughout our lives.

Love you all,
Kyle

P.S. Heres a picture of me the day after, before my blackeye really set in.

4th of July

The 4th of July was so much fun and so busy!  Kyle's family all came to Provo for a week-long vacation.  :)  We had a great time enjoying barbecues, an initiatory session at the Timpanogos Temple, parade, Stadium of Fire, Bridal Veil Falls, and after all of that...relaxing.
(Sorry I don't have any more pictures...These are the only ones taken with my camera.)

I had so much fun getting to know Kyle's family better.  At the end of the week, both Kyle and I were exhausted, but it was totally worth it. :)

Something exciting that happened to me is I found out I was listed as the 6th author on a paper being presented at the ASHA convention!  My thesis did actually pay off and the results are being published (all my data is being published as well as some of the other areas).  So exciting!

"Catch Up" Post

I'm sorry we haven't been very good about keeping up with the blog lately!  I'll start back at right after where we last left off....Kyle's Birthday.

Next was General Conference.
I had asked if my brother and his family (up in Bountiful) were doing anything for conference or if we could drive up after the Saturday morning session and spend the afternoon/evening with them.  They said they were going to be home and they'd love to see us.  During the last talk of the Saturday morning session, we got a call from my brother asking if we could possibly leave ASAP so we could watch the kids while they attended the afternoon session...Not exactly what I had envisioned especially since we were going up to see my brother and sister-in-law as well, but we were basically ready to go so we said sure.  During the Saturday afternoon session, we found out the reason for why we were asked to babysit on such late notice...Jen's mom was called as the Second Counselor in the General RS Presidency (Linda Reeves).  I had started to figure out something big was supposed to happen at the conference, but we had no idea that was going to happen since they weren't allowed to tell ANYBODY (even their two kids on missions had to find out while watching conference). Kyle and I had a fun time watching my 2 nieces and nephew.  They are all super cute.

Then came my 23rd birthday.
My birthday this year was alright.  (It landed on Friday the 13th haha.)  I had a cold all during spring break and it was still here (a week later) on my birthday.  The weather was super cold and rainy all day, but there was some thunder at one point. J  In addition to my cold, Kyle got the flu the night before so he had been up all night and slept most of my birthday (two 3-hour naps).  I started feeling lonely during his second nap, so I hopped into bed with him and read a book.  Later that afternoon, we picked up my car after fixing the AC.  We went to Smith’s to buy candles and flowers, but we ended up going to Costco and picked out even better flowers and a rotisserie chicken for dinner.  I forgot to mention, but I made the cake and a chicken pot pie the night before my birthday for dinner so that I wouldn’t have to make it on my birthday and I could just eat leftovers.  After we went to Costco, we watched some stuff together and snuggled.  Kyle felt much better by then.  My brother, Jeremy (who is on a mission), sent me a letter and it got here on my birthday, so that was a lot of fun.  This is a list of my presents: laptop battery, pizza pan, pot holders, flowers, cleats, money, See’s candy.  Overall it was a pretty good birthday…not what I had envisioned (Kyle and I had planned on going out in nature but saw the weather was going to be bad so planned on going mini golfing or something.  Instead, we stayed home and he slept most of the day…Oh well, what can you do?)

Also, my mom made a video of our wedding footage Nyall and Chris took the day we got married.  It made me so happy and reminded me what a great day it was. We got it on my birthday and watched it together. J

1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
We celebrated our 1 year anniversary on April 23, 2012.  Since Kyle was so sick on my birthday, he wanted to make it up to me so he bought me a beautiful necklace from Jared.  It’s three little hearts intertwined and going vertically.  It was so sweet of him to find such a beautiful necklace.  In addition, he bought me some flowers from Costco.  These flowers were a little different than the usual bouquets, though.  He bought me 3 individually potted Gerbera Daisies so that I could start my own garden. J  It was so cute!  Gerbera Daisies are my favorite flower and they were the cutest colors: light orange, yellow, and pink.  He also bought me 2 dozen roses (he bought me a dozen roses when he proposed with half white for eternity and half red for love).

We then went to the mall and took pictures in one of those photobooths (since we’ve never done that before and I’ve always wanted to).  We went out to dinner at PF Chang’s.  (One of our favorite places to go out to eat is Panda Express, so I told Kyle we should step it up a notch tonight since he’s never eaten there.)   After that, we went to Lowe’s so that we could buy a little planter (as well as a few other things) for me to plant my flowers in.  We spent the rest of the evening planting the flowers together.

The flowers we planted...I don't know why this picture flipped

We also enjoyed a piece of our wedding cake...Not nearly as good as it was the day we got married or the half that we shared on our 6 month anniversary.  Oh well. :) We had such a great time.  I love Kyle SO much!  I can’t wait to spend many more years with him!

GRADUATION!
My Family

My good friend Alyssa

One of my favorite pictures of us

I graduated with my Master's Degree in December, but walked in the graduation ceremony in April.  My parents drove up from CA and my sister-in-law came down from Bountiful for it.  It was great because I got special permission from my supervisors to attend my graduation without having to take the time off.  It was so awesome.

Life as of Late:

  • Kyle and I have both received new callings in our ward.  He was recently called as the first counselor in our bishopric and I was just called as the RS president.  We are both staying pretty busy, to say the least. ;)
  • I finished teaching the school year and started doing therapy for the summer school kids.  It's 3 days a week and I'm finished with it July 19th, so I'll still have a bit of a summer. :)
  • Kyle finished his classes as well as Spring semester.

We bought a new "toy" and are having a great time trying it out

I got a new sewing machine and put in an invisible zipper all by myself! (...Well, almost.  I had over-the-phone coaching. :))

Kyle's Birthday

So, I told Kyle he had to write about his birthday, but he said he didn't want to since we didn't have any pictures to post...oops. ;)

On Kyle's birthday, we were planning to go to JCW's with Stan and Taran so I made his cake the night before so we could enjoy it. As I brought out the cake to sing to him, it hit me that I didn't have any candles...so halfway through the song I lit a match for him to blow out. :) We inhaled the cake within 3 days. For Kyle's birthday, I surprised him by writing "Happy Birthday, I love you!" in whiteboard marker on the mirror in the bathroom. I also pulled out a poem that my mom used to do for us on our birthdays in the shape of a bear that wished you a "Beary Happy Birthday" for each gummy cinnamon bear you found. I knew Kyle didn't really like cinnamon bears, so I bought starburst, taped 2 together and put a bear sticker on them. He found all 25 of them in about 10 minutes...instead of finding them throughout the day... ;) It was really cute to watch him run around tearing the house apart. He opened his presents (which weren't super exciting)...2 included disposable crock pot bags (so he doesn't have to wash the crock pot haha) and a huge mug (which he loves). He also got a few other things. We spent time together all day. The weather outside was absolutely beautiful so we went on a walk. Love you so much, hun! :D

Valentine's Day

This year was our first Valentine's Day as a married couple, so that was really special. I made Kyle some conversation heart sugar cookies as part of his gift. :) Another part of our gifts to each other included half a pound box of See's candy. Every year for Christmas, my grandma gives me a See's candy gift certificate for a pound box of candy. So, Kyle and I used it together and each picked out our own half pound box. I really enjoy going with him and picking it out together. I did have to hide it from him, though, so he wouldn't eat it until Valentine's Day. ;)

Because Valentine's Day was on a school night, Kyle and I decided to go out to dinner the Friday before. We used one of our Christmas gift cards and went to California Pizza Kitchen. Out of all the many restaurants we've been to since we started dating, this is one we have never been to together. We went right after Kyle got home from school, so we were able to beat the dinner rush and enjoy ourselves. :) After CPK, we went to Costco and Kyle and I picked out some tulips. It was funny because right after he handed them to me, said "Happy Valentine's Day" and kissed me on the cheek, a bunch of older ladies that were standing by the flowers started laughing and said "That was easy!" :) I thought it was great. I love tulips and I got to pick out the color I wanted.

Sounds almost like we did everything for Valentine's Day before Valentine's Day, doesn't it? Well, we basically did. ;) But Kyle and I each bought each other a card. I got him the one on the right and he gave me the one on the left. I thought it was cute because he coordinated his card to match. His card said "Since it's Valentine's Day, mind if I borrow a hug? I'll give one right back." :) It was a cute card.

For dinner on Valentine's Day, we decided to do what we did last year...which was go to Panda Express. :) Last year for Valentine's Day, we went to Panda Express and then went to the picnic spot near where Kyle proposed and enjoyed dinner there. It was way too cold and too late by the time we got dinner to do that again, so we bought it and enjoyed it in our nice warm home. Thanks for making my Valentine's Day so wonderful, sweetheart! :D I love you!

Formatting

Just so you know...We've officially had it with trying to format the posts on this blog. (Hence changing the background back to the old style.) So, we try to make it look as good as possible, then we give up. If some of the wording doesn't line up with the picts, it's not completely our faults. :)

Christmas in Arizona

After Jeremy reported to the MTC on Wednesday December 21st, Kyle and I drove up to Bountiful to spend an hour or so with Nyall, Jen (and family), and my parents before we left for the airport. Our flight didn't leave until 9pm, which Kyle and I decided (looking back on it) was just too late. We got to his parents' house without any problems and slept very well that night. We were absolutely exhausted since we didn't get to the house until almost midnight.

We had a great time relaxing and spending time with the family. Christmas Eve, we had a musical talent show. People sang, played instruments (including me on my flute), followed by the acting out of the Nativity. I was so nervous to perform in front of Kyle's family, I don't know why. I guess it was probably because I had never played for them before and I hadn't really practiced nearly as much as I would've liked (since the past week was super busy with the London family). It turned out just fine, though, and I'm glad I did it.

Christmas was great. We got up around 7:30 to open gifts. Kyle and I got a lot of DVD's this year. :) I made him a scrapbook basically of all the little things that happened while we dated. I think he rather enjoyed it.

I had a lot of fun spending time with Lainey and Libby, helping them color in the coloring books they got for Christmas.

Later that week, we went to Schnepf Farms. We had a great time going on a hay ride and feeding the deer. :) Kyle enjoyed riding the little kid bikes, too. :)
